Want to know more about Sebastian? Indian River County is home of the beautiful city of Sebastian. It is the main city of the Sebastian Vero Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Indian River County is included. Sebastian started as a fishing village in the 1870’s. It was officially founded in 1882. Early settlers of the place were Andrew Canova, Ed Marr, Thomas New and David Peter Gibson. They settled there in 1870. Incorporation of Sebastian as a city was finalized in May 18, 1925. The name St. Sebastian was officially changed and the St. was dropped naming it only as Sebastian. Sebastian has a total area of 35.2 square kilometers of which 32.7 square kilometers is land and 2.4 square kilometers is water. According to the United States Census data for 2010, there are 21,921 people living in Sebastian of which there are 9,508 households and 6.462 families. The city’s per capita income for 2010 is $ 24,959. Sebastian is well known for treasure seekers and hunters. In 1715, it was well known that a Treasure fleet was lost during a big storm of what was now known as Treasure coast. Estimated value of the lost treasure is $ 500 million. Only a small portion of that was recovered. Pelican Island which is nearby was declared as a National Wildlife Sanctuary in 1903. |
